The idea was:

The week end of July 15-16th is a big Henson horse breed event in the bay of the Somme where we are located.

We present the year's foals, fillies and organise a few shows for the public.

In order to indulge ourselves but also:

-         spread the good word about polocrosse which is unknown in France

-         as well as present our breed of horses

we would like to invite teams from european countries to take part in the week end.

We ask that you do not envisage bringing your horses as this is a purely Henson horse festival.

The result is:

20 to 25 participants (We lost some over the WE. They probably settled in the sand dunes)

Saturday afternoon early: bareback riding

Saturday afternoon late: swimming lessons

Saturday evening early: Polocrosse on the beach (Californian style)

Saturday evening late: BBQ party

Saturday night early: Night ride

Saturday night late: Time for sleep

Sunday morning: Qualification games

Sunday afternoon: Finals

 Barbara’s article :

July at the Henson Riding centre

This has been another major week for Henson horses in the bay of the Somme area in France. This year’s trail riding Tour de Somme occured from Wednesday 12th to Saturday 15th of July, followed by the annual summer breed event known as the FERYA when the horses are put on show and the year’s stud farm is presented to the public.

Participants to the Tour de Somme this year numbered four and were all members of Toll Rides off Road Trust, they were led alternatively by Rémi Bader and Michel Beaufils under Barbara Bureau’s supervision of the Henson horse centre. They enjoyed both beach and countryside rides, along with forest orienteering and learning how to carriage drive along the way. Two nights were spent camping out in various locations firstly in the Authie estuary in a marshland field and later in the Ponthoile area, near Crécy forest whilst two nights were spent in a bungalow near the Marquenterre wildlife estate.

The days following on from the Tour de Somme  were under the auspices of polocrosse playing, as the Henson center welcomed over 20 various European nationals hailing from Norway, Belgium, Holland, the UK and Ireland. The various teams first became acquainted with their Henson horses during a beach ride which included swimming bareback in the waves and cantering through the pine wood forest, followed by a BBQ night out in the dunes and some beach polocrosse playing. On Sunday 16th of July, the official FERYA day was busy with various displays, including a 5 in hand carriage driving presentation, a Trec obstacle course crossed by young Henson horses, vaulting Cossack style, vaulting indoors with young children, a Horse ball match and throughout the day a European Polocrosse championship which ultimately pitted in the final game the UK team against the French men’s team. The UK won narrowly on a score of 7 to 6 after an amazing come back as they were being led 6 to 1 by the French men in the first 6 minute Chukkah !

All in all a great couple of days enjoyed by all under a very hot french sun.
